Some Vital information regarding Spam / Phishing

Some Vital information regarding Spam / Phishing

Here are some precautions to take to prevent your
email from being hacked. Many of you are already aware of
these but we tend to forget at any given time and hence the
reminder.

1. If it is from a stranger, do not open it however
tempting the subject line is.

2. Even if it is from somebody you know, make sure you
do not open attachments unless you know ahead of time that
person is sending you the attachment.

3. Tell your friends and family to fill the subject
line always so as to have relevance to text (hacking
attempts leave the subject line blank many times).

4. Never open the links provided inside the email text
unless you ascertain beforehand that the email is from your
friend or family member (such as "I am sending you the link
for the lyrics for this song" in the link provided). Also
tell them to address you by the personal name with
which they normally address you. If that is absent do not
click on the links in the text.

5. This one is well-known but still worth repeating.
Even if the message is from your bank, credit card
institution or other common places with which you do
business, do not click on the link provided in the text.
Always go to the secure site of the institution by typing in
the address or going to the bookmarked/favorite site.

6. By inadvertently opening a virus-laden email we not
only risk infecting out own computer but those of our
contacts too.
